What is Moore’s Law?

Moore’s law was predated in 1965, it states that as time passes, technology will be relatively faster, smarter, and more efficient. At the same time, the price will also be cheaper.

The law stated: “Considering the current rate of technological development, the complexity of an integrated circuit, seeking a minimum cost would double every 18months.”

By Moore’s law, it means the number of transistors on a chip found in a computer or computing system will drastically increase every 2 years of manufacturing the devices or gadgets. However, the units became faster, smaller, high performance, and more affordable. While not all gadgets or systems use the theory behind Moore’s law, most computing and transistor devices still do.

Who devised the Moore’s Law?

Gordon Earle Moore was the pioneer of Silicon Valley and the co-founder of Intel Corporation. Born 1929 in San Francisco, Moore was blessed to have gone and graduated from the best school but his passion for semiconductor will make him etch his mark in history.

Before Intel, Moore had worked at Shockley semiconductor lab, the noble Prize winner and inventor of the transistor in Palo Alta. There they studied in-depth manufacturing methods of the silicon-based transistor and how to efficiently manufacture it. When the company refused to hire a professional manager, Moore and seven other employees (tagged the Traitorous Eight) left Shockley to form Fairchild semiconductor corporation. From here, they broke off with Noyce to found Intel Corporation, one of the biggest manufacturers of semiconductors till day.

How Has Moore’s Law fared throughout the years?

In 1965, the largest functional computer system was the IMB 305 RAMAC. This computer weighed close to a ton and could only store 3.75MB of data. It also took the company over $3,000 to service its monthly. Fast forward to today, the same computer would take over $31,000 to maintain and would really not make a difference.

Today we have smartphones that sit in your palm with 64MB and some having up to 512 MB internal storage, which is 17,000 times faster than the IBM RAMAC and weighs a mere 200 grams. This is Moore’s Law in action, gadgets will be smaller, faster, and less expensive to maintain.

Over the years, researchers are still looking for ways to improve the transistor chip for better efficiency. In 2007, computer systems were able to store 1 terabyte of data, which was 51 years after Moore law came into existence. However, in 2009, computing systems were able to hold up to 2 terabytes of data in just two years. Now things have changed. In 2019, Hard Disc Drive could hold 15 terabytes, and SSD could hold up to 100 terabytes of data. It is an improvement; one that Moore is alive to witness.

Now with this change in data storage, Moore’s law is in action hence making gadgets small, cheaper, smarter with high-performance ability. All these changes came into existence due to Moore’s law. So the next time you are wearing that Apple watches that can track your heart rate, sleep pattern, make calls, send messages and videos, and log on to a broader network. Remember the research that has gone into it for over the past 5 decades. Moore’s law has duly explained the exponential growth in the power of a chip, and it is ongoing.

Today, inventors run with Moore’s Law in creating amazing electronics with supersonic speed and incredible performances. Moore’s law is the rule of thumb for many companies in Silicon Valley and outside today. It is the reason why you can send, receive, and even watch a video over the internet. It is why communication is doing so well even, in bad weather and many more.

Moore’s law is based on the power of transistors, so what are they?

Transistors are the brain cells of the in a chip that enables easy control of the computer. These simple yet complex transistors are made from silicon. Normally, they play two roles in the world of electronics and computing – like a switch or an amplifier. However, in today's computer age, most transistors are used as the switch element on the chip. Basically, what it does is it can move the current of information from a smaller section to a large section or another part of the chip at the press of a button.

Today we have systems with chips that contain millions of transistor cells and can be controlled individually for the effective function of the device. So in electronics, Moore’s law plays into the fact that each electron is controlled individually but works with others to make the unit work efficiently, but it is different in amplifiers.

When transistors are used as amplifiers, they can take small electrons from a device and channel it into another device by multiplying the power and performance. This technology works in hearing aid, sound surround system, and many other communication tools.

Whether you are aware of it or not, Moore’s Law is a single invention that changed and is changing the world we live in today. Every electronic or computer you see in the universe has a transistor in it. Thanks to this law, we can invent, re-invent, and update the power and performance of gadgets into better and smarter technology. 

Today the smallest transistor has the same diameter as the human hair; the world waits what the next 2, 20, or 200 years would look like in the world of technology and innovation.
